You may be wondering whypoliticians are so different from us. Well, the truth is one has to be aspecial sort of person top be a politician. As the great Scottish comedian,Billy Connelly once said “we should make wanting to be a politician anautomatic disqualification for being one- who would want to be one?”.
What I am about to say inthis article doesn’t apply to all politicians; the problem is that any it doesnot apply to never get into any important positions.
Politicians tell us what wewant to hear. That they care about the economy, they want the best for “thepeople” that they are on our side, but in varying degrees the following is theactual truth:
They are only interestedin power, money and their self image of importance.
They will act for“the people” only when it forwards point 1)
They areinterested in exerting as much control over the daily lives of people as theycan believing that the control is for the best, but is really just to give themmore power.
They believe themselvesto be superior to everyone else, simply by virtue of being in Power. Actuallythey are no more intelligent than anyone else and sometimes considerably lessso (look at George Bush in the U.S).
In the UK 80% ofpoliticians started as lawyers. In a lawyers mind the law is everything. It isa higher priority than ethics, morals, decency and often plain good sense. Sois it really a surprise when they come out with the “I stuck strictly to therules” argument when questioned about their highly immoral expenses claims. This is lawyer think; it takes a lot of training to recondition a man so he runshis life purely around rules to guide him. It probably takes a special kind of individualin the first place. If one strips away all the gumph one is left with “It wasn’tmy fault, I was allowed to take the money so I took it, what else do you expectto me to do?” In a thriving and vibrant society this does not happen.
The other interesting excuseis that they “are not paid much compared to the private sector”. Excuse me? ThePrivate Sector does not get the privilege of serving the people. Or are we lookingtowards the model of some other countries in the world (including in Europe) of the government are the boss, the people theservants and the police are there to keep the people in line.
These new ideas of democracy, where the government the legal system and the police are there to serve thepeople. Where it is considered a right to protest and challenge the governmentare quite unique to Britainand the U.S.Some more fascists countries in the world don’t like it, but it is the wayforward, more freedom for people is the way.
But it seems to have beenlost. Politicians complain about not “being paid enough” and therefore “must”milk the expenses, after all I have no idea how they can possibly survive on £64,766 a year, porridge for breakfast and bring sandwiches I say. This is a great payment andthey should be PROUD to serve their country, being an MP is vocation. So whatis most worrying is their self-serving attitude.
The other thing is the arrogance. A politician alwaysbelieves they know better they know better than the common people. I waswatching Gordon Brown the other day on a morning TV show. In response to DavidCameron’s call for a general election he made the astonishing statement that “whatthe people want is for the government to concentrate on steering the countrythrough this recession”. Well he obviously doesn’t believe the opinion polls,or chooses to ignore them, as well as the online petitions. They indicate thatabout 87% of people feel there should be a general election now. His policiesand stewardship put us in the recession in the first place, there has beenlittle evidence he is any better than anyone else to get us out of it. Couldthe real reason be that he would lose the election by a landslide if he calledit now? You see? A selfish, self-serving motive covered up by a false nobleone. That’s what politicians do.
I think it is probably time for people to get on thestreets and protest peacefully but loudly and embarrassingly, let’s get anelection now, as the only thing these people care about is their position ofpower, in a democracy we have the power to take it away.
Lets end this b******t now and start demanding it, letthem know what will happen if you mess with the people.
